It lay next door to an off licenced shop and was opposite the bus shelter, a sweetie shop and was not many a mile from the Lounge cinema. Who went to Saturday matinees, anyone?
However, returning to the subject of Fish and Chips one would have to venture back along Stile Common Road towards Pip Hill until you arrived at the Policemans Tardis where, right next door, you would find the providers of the best Fish and Chips in the whole wide world, Frank and Harry Hamer(played cricket and soccer with Franks son). Six old pence for a fish and thruppence for a dollop of chips. The bits were thrown on for nowt.
Should imagine that all of the aforementioned landmarks are long gone, unless anyone knows different?
Hello There.
This is Reevesy replying to your quote regarding good fish and chips in Newsome. You are perfectly correct about
there being a fish shop next to the off licence at the end of Stile Common road, the off licence was called Beaumonts. The sweet shop shop across the road was called Baileys and run by a nice lady who owned the business, just knew her as Mrs Bailey. There was also a circular bus shelter next door but two from the sweet shop very few left if at all any today.
Now we go back along Stile Common road to the police tardis which was situated next to Harry Hall family butchers right at the bottom of Cross lane, then you get slightly across with you buildings, next door to the tardis was the post office owned by Mr Fox,then it was Greenwood Street, then Hamers fish shop, followed by about five houses then Harry Hamers
news agents all of which are still standing today.Harry and Frank have well passed on. but their siblings are still going strong. David
Susan, and Pat are Harry's while Mick is Franks son.
As for me i'm still in the Newsome area and have no plans to abandon ship just yet.
Hope that i have given you a good geographical update of the area. all the best Reevesy
