Postby redback » "Sun Nov 16, 2008 6:56 am"

Can anyone help?
As a kid in the 50's I can recall the great fish and chips we had from Jones fish and chip shop on Lockwood road Lockwood.

If you have any info on the shop, or the family, I would love to hear from you.

Speaking of Newsome, you had a half decent chippy yourselves at the junction of Newsome Road/Stile Common Road. It lay next door to an off licenced shop and was opposite the bus shelter, a sweetie shop and was not many a mile from the Lounge cinema. Who went to Saturday matinees, anyone?

However, returning to the subject of Fish and Chips one would have to venture back along Stile Common Road towards Pip Hill until you arrived at the Policemans Tardis where, right next door, you would find the providers of the best Fish and Chips in the whole wide world, Frank and Harry Hamer(played cricket and soccer with Franks son). Six old pence for a fish and thruppence for a dollop of chips. The bits were thrown on for nowt.

Should imagine that all of the aforementioned landmarks are long gone, unless anyone knows different?

Can't help with news of the Lockwood fish and chip shop but word has just reached me that Leymoor Fisheries (between Longwood and Golcar) is to close this weekend for ever. Have been a customer of this establishment all my life I am very sad to hear this and to know that I have had my last fish and chips from there. Very sad. I believe that the present owners although doing well want to retire and couldn't sell it on as a shop. I spotted planning permission granted to convert the building into flats the last time that I was in Huddersfield. I wish them well.

Hello There.
This is Reevesy replying to your quote regarding good fish and chips in Newsome. You are perfectly correct about
there being a fish shop next to the off licence at the end of Stile Common road, the off licence was called Beaumonts. The sweet shop shop across the road was called Baileys and run by a nice lady who owned the business, just knew her as Mrs Bailey. There was also a circular bus shelter next door but two from the sweet shop very few left if at all any today.
Now we go back along Stile Common road to the police tardis which was situated next to Harry Hall family butchers right at the bottom of Cross lane, then you get slightly across with you buildings, next door to the tardis was the post office owned by Mr Fox,then it was Greenwood Street, then Hamers fish shop, followed by about five houses then Harry Hamers
news agents all of which are still standing today.Harry and Frank have well passed on. but their siblings are still going strong. David
Susan, and Pat are Harry's while Mick is Franks son.
As for me i'm still in the Newsome area and have no plans to abandon ship just yet.
Hope that i have given you a good geographical update of the area. all the best Reevesy

Wonderful Reevesy, thank you so much. The geography lesson depicting both locations could not have been any more clear. How it all came flooding back to me even though I haven't been anywhere near for donkeys ages. Memory must be fading somewhat though, I inadvertently allocated David Hamer to the wrong Dad in my first effort. Take care.

And the ginnel is still there next to the old butchers, in days gone by there was a field of pigs behind the butchers and further down quite a few hen-runs before you reached the steps down to the river, cant remember if these were the cat steps or crazy steps, one of these refered to the steps from pip hill to the woodman which then took you down the band walk to Queens Mill, stood for hours peering through the chickenwire watching the men making ropes.

About the pigs behind what was once Harry Halls butchers shop. They belonged to the Hall family butchers. Quite right about the ginnell only about 5 foot wide all the way down. Then you started to go towards the CAP steps,on your right were hen runs as you say.
The area was called the CORN FIELDS,for what reason i don't know. Jackie Richardson used to own a small holding down there on the right as you got to the bottom of the ginnell,he used to have pigs as well as poultry. On your left was a church called St Michaels. The road which ran alongside was called Orchard Street. I had many a happy hour playing in that area as i was brought up in Whitehead Lane. I like to recall the good old days, it's also nice to see that other people have memories of the area.

Was the church on the left not called St Matthews. Maybe I'm going senile and I should know the answer for certain as me and my sister were given bibles for best attenders of the Sunday School.

Spot on with the name of the church. It's me that is going senile. but i do remember a rather long blue wooden hut that was used for Sunday school readings, also it was used for Primrose Hill free treat day as a dining room for the children. Old peoples flats stand on the site now. But it was definitley St Matthews, thank you for correcting me.

.......and thank you for reminding me of Primrose Hill free treat day. I have many happy memories of this event, not least in 1956 when holding the programme up as the parade arrived at Pip Hill cricket ground and we, the cricketers, were still still playing. Turned out magnificently for me, within minutes of hundreds of revellers turning up I smashed a six against the Crimea wall, off the bowling of the late, great Chris Balderstone(Paddock) to bring up my half century and, as was the tradition in those days, hats were passed around the throng and I made what for me was a small fortune. I distinctly remember my father, who had never ever previously watched me play in a cricket match, come dashing on to the pitch from the free treat beer tent shouting....'that's my boy'.......'that's my boy'. Methinks he was after a share of the collection but was out of luck. Most of it was gobbled up at the Palais de Danse in town later that evening. HAPPY DAYS.

This topic of fish and chips,Primrose Hill,St Matthews church on the corn fields,Primrose Hill free treat, it is getting very nostalgic. Some great memories come flooding back. While I'm still on the free treat theme, what about the Primrose Hill National Anthem "BLOSSOM BELLS" which was always sung outside the Woodman public house at the top of the band walk. The landlord and landlady if i'm correct were Charlie and Muriel Boyd,a great couple even though i was to young to go into the pub in the early sixties. The procession then proceeded down Whitehead Lane, along Damside, then up Malvern Road to Stile Common school for the judging of the fancy dress.Which i won one year 1959 i think!, i went as BILLY WRIGHT the England football captain. Then tea in the baptist church, or St Matthews down on the corn fields. Then up to the cricket field for a great deal of fun,a truely unforgetable time in our young lives. We also had our very own transvesite in the form of ROY FOX, what a character he was sadly no more. He put his heart and soul into Primrose Hill free treat. If you're listening Roy,Thank you for some great times in and around PRIMROSE HILL..I'll be looking at this site to hopefully see some positive replies.
