Why not, farmers, fishermen and other industries get subsidies, why not shopkeepers and taxi drivers to keep them safe.

Yes I totally agree it would be nice for every business to get subsidies/gifts but in the current climate and with a skint council it seems a little odd that money is given for some things and denied for such things as New Mill Library.

Why cant the shops all close at 6 o'clock if they feel unsafe operating at later hours, leave late opening to the big stores that have the deterent of more staff and security :?:

Possibly (I don't know because I have never worked in a shop), make a lot of money after hours when people are home from work. They are also offering a service to the local community opening late and deserve to be kept safe by society. Is this the same advice for taxi drivers despondent?

Why subsidize the shop keepers.?

Subsidies are for businesses which are not economically viable due to economic, evironmental and/or enforced govt quotas etc.etc.

Corner shops are thriving businesses. If they dont want to be spend on their saftey thats their prerogative.

We all know the creative accounting that goes on for taxi drivers and shop keepers. They make a mint.

And can you tell us how many cameras have produced evidence to aid in punishing the vermin in court ?

Like I said....this just stinks of jumping on the bandwagon with an idea that has obviously not been thought through properly.

you answered your own question with the economic & environmental issues....how do you know they are thriving business'...strange how many business's are having to close...

Interesting when most people are against large supermarkets blighting Huddersfield, but then not supporting the local corner shop...does that mean you don't want any shops?

The Conservatives have campaigned against the use of CCTV, which the evidence shows reduces the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour. They have made clear they would water down the police's ability to use DNA evidence - making it harder to convict the most dangerous criminals.

I believe in free markets. If it aint viable then shut it down.

But dont patronise the local shop keepers. They would not be running going concerns if it was not beneficial to them. And good luck to them they deserve the rewards.

It also won't matter when (or if) they bother opening, whether they carry stock people want and whether they offer even the most remote level of customer service.

Personally, I find it a ridiculous proposition that the council should pay for shopkeepers to install extra security measures. Anyone opening a shop, especially late at night or in an isolated or "rough" area, should be aware of the security risks before opening and should factor crime prevention into their initial business plan.

I operate a retail outlet and in addition to our alarm system, we operate a CCTV system covering the entire store, back and front with instant access from within the store and remote access when I am elsewhere but still have staff working. The cost, roughly £3000, which is not a considerable amount of money when starting a business. In addition, we have a panic button and have a number of "common sense" security considerations: good lighting, peephole on back doors, large windows (why on earth do convenience stores insist on block their windows?) and staff trained to observe and report suspicious behaviour.

Protecting your staff and business should be a priority for any business owner, it should not be up to the council to fund it.

The local community would adapt to the restricted opening hours, or is it more a case of opening late to serve booze & fags to kids. The older generation will recall the time when shops did indeed close at 6pm, half day wednesday and no opening at all on a sunday, we survived.

What a stupid person you are JR Hartley and as for your spelling well who is DUMB?

Anyway back to the thread- do you really believe the council should give our money to shopkeepers etc?

So my thread did give you an itch ...........so there's still hope for ya!
As for my spelling it was for Mr Dummer..............you understood it and replyed.....I rest my case

Yes the council should give as much money and help that is possible to protect the shopkeepers, they are a part of the community and provide a service to the public.
Its ok for some to sit on their backsides ranting and raveing about it, try working in a shop for a week on a council estate you'll understand what's happening in the real world.

Dear dumbest otherwise known as Hartley or hardleyworthit, you are to wit what the ripperwas to surgery.. Of course all shopkeepers everywhere shud feel safe. When you have a goverment who would send yu to prison for defendin your sen, no wonder we loose confidense in Labor. They are no frend of the ordinray person, black or white. The party that brings bak the death penalty can win votes. If that be bnp then all the rest can only blame the sens.

We would not need CCTV or other things if people were scared of the consquenses of their actions. The laws are too soft and need to be toughened 1000%. This country needs to lok at the USA and in extreme cases some of the ARAB countries where the punishment fits the crime...eye for eye, etc.

What deterent is it for a criminal when they get a soft sentance in a soft jail, where free meals are provided, they pay no bills, get to watch tv and sky, play sports, get access to the internet.

This sounds more like a holiday!

An aunt of mine who lives in Stoke and was burgled twice within a fortnight has had a temporary CCTV camera fitted by the police that covers her front door. I suspect that what police do differs from force to force.
