Dangerous dog breeds cull ?

Postby despondent » "Tue Dec 01, 2009 3:51 pm"

Yet another family pet turned into a killer, is it time for a cull of certain breeds where mental stability is questionable.

Unless properly controlled all dogs are dangerous. From the ankle nipping terriers to great dane it makes no difference.

When out walking I fear the small terriers far more than the large breeds because quite simply the owners of the larger dogs have a tendency to keep them on leads. However, most of the owners of terriers let them roam.

The twice I've been bitten were by terriers and both times the owners said that they couldn't understand why they'd suddenly attacked.

Personally I'd like to see a law that makes it a punishable offence for dogs to be in public places without being on a short lead.

I seem to recall that it is an offence - but like so many others - where can you go for enforcement?

Yet another family pet turned into a killer

As I understand it, this wretched mutt was no family pet but some ill-conceived designer fashion accessory.

I fear for any child introduced into the company of dogs bred for jaw strength and 'looking hard'
Cull the half wits humans, not the poor animals.

Uncle Grumpy is spot on, cull the half wits who keep these dangerous fashion monsters.

I use the phrase "******** with Dog". Whenever you see any of this type of dog, look at the other end of the lead, there will be a "********", it is them that require culling.

It is definitely time to cull some of these dangerous breeds, there is no place in modern society for these vicious animals.
Now, if I walked around carrying say, an axe, I would very quickly be arrested. However I can legally walk around with a canine killing machine (e.g. Bull Terrier or a Rottweiller). Strange isn't it? This weekend I have witnessed an incident that demonstrates how dangerous these dogs are:
On Saturday I look my children for a walk along the canal at Linthwaite. After a while we came across two Pit Bull-type Terriers tearing a goose to pieces. The owners were hitting the dogs, kicking them, but the beasts were intent on killing this innocent animal. Eventually, the owners managed to bring the dogs under control but by them it was too late for the goose. There was the horrid sight of blood and and bits of goose all over the snow-covered tow-path. I rang the RSPCA to see if someone could come and attend to the goose, and described the incident over the phone to the RSPCA inspector. The Inspector asked what type of dogs they were, and I stated 'Pit Bulls'. The dogs owner then piped-up: 'They are Staffies'!! As if that made a difference. As the RSPCA inspector stated, 'Staffies' are dangerous dogs.
My daughter was horrified by this spectacle and asked why anyone would want to have one of these horrid beasts as pets. I could provide no answer beyond saying that some people were not very bright and have these dogs as bizarre 'status symbols'!!
My main concern over this incident (reitterated by other passersby on Saturday) was that rather than a goose, the dogs could have attacked a child.
Once again we hear comments that there aren't bad dogs, just bad owners who can't control their dogs. The owners of these 'Staffies' were obviously concerned and may even have been responsible, however, they clearly couldn't control these killings machines once they attacked.
Lets act now and destroy these vicious and unnecessary animals.

When will something positive be done about these dangerous dogs, they are not bred for there adorable nature as family pets, they are potential killers with a hair-trigger, if the breed goes extinct all the better.

Couldn't agree more. Far too many aggressive dogs (and owners) amongst the population and long overdue to reduce the numbers of both.

You have to be trained and tested for fitness to drive a car. Maybe it is time to train and test dog owners?
There is not only occasional horrendous accidents to consider. Sheep worrying is a bigger issue than gets reported.
Then there is toxicara canis that seems to be completely forgotten - and the messed up play areas and paths.
Of course only a minority of owners are irresponsible but as in everything else a tiny minority spoils it for the rest.

Indeed, a letter the other day was from an irate lady complaining about doggy do on paths and grass in her area, she stated that her dog is taught not to do this as she allows it to run free in a wooded area before reaching the path, so wherever she lives; if you go down in the woods today beware of a nasty surprise, courtesy of this lady's dog.

It is amazing that anyone is still allowed to keep a dog as a pet. They are completely unsuitable for families with children, carry disease and are a ticking time bomb when it comes to suddenly attacking people.
